Loss Prevention

Retail Loss Prevention Overview

There are three main causes of retail losses: internal theft (i.e., employee theft), external theft (i.e., shoplifting), and paperwork errors (i.e., incorrect records from inventory checks). Retailers can use radio frequency identification (RFID) tags to track items from the production floor forward. RFID tags have read-and-write capabilities to record specific details about each item for more in-depth tracking. In order for RFID tags to work, they need to have a consistent, reliable energy source like wireless power transfer.

How It Works

Step 1

Businesses attach RFID-enabled tags to merchandise before it enters the store. These tags enable automated checkout and return, as well as automated inventory counting.

Step 2

RFID sensor readers placed on walls, shelves, doorways, and more can identify individual items as they pass by and monitor their movements.

Step 3

RFID trackers collect data about where products are moving in real time. If a theft occurs, staff can evaluate the data to identify trends and enact stricter loss prevention measures moving forward.
