Wireless Charging via In-Box Transmitters Now Possible; Evaluation Kits Available
LAS VEGAS, NV — (Marketwired) — 01/06/16 — Energous Corporation (“Energous®” or “the Company”) (NASDAQ: WATT), the developer of WattUp™, a revolutionary wire-free charging technology for mobile and IoT devices that provides “over-the-air” power at a distance, today introduced the first miniature WattUp transmitter design that is both small and cost effective enough to ship in-box with small wearable and IoT devices. The mini WattUp transmitter, which will be demonstrated at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino during 2016 International CES, can be as small as a USB keychain drive and can be powered solely from a USB port, providing excellent flexibility and portability for WattUp transmitter designs. It also will be compatible with all WattUp-enabled devices, even those from different manufacturers, creating a strong eco-system of products that all work together.
“We have made significant strides on the miniaturization of our WattUp technology in 2015,” said Stephen R. Rizzone, CEO of Energous. “The result is an entirely new market opportunity that will address previously untapped verticals like wearables and IoT, with a solution that offers true mobility and portability. In addition to enabling new partners and new markets, this technology advancement has the potential to accelerate our revenue streams as Energous continues to drive toward commercialization of WattUp, through partners, at the end of 2016 or early 2017.”
Small devices such as wearables have not been served by traditional mat-based charging solutions due to the size of the coils needed in the receiver. Many manufacturers of these devices want to leverage wireless charging to completely seal their products, allowing for full waterproof capabilities as well as offer the convenience of mobile and portable wireless charging. With the miniaturization of a WattUp transmitter, Energous is making this possible:
- The new portable mini WattUp transmitter replaces the cables and power adapters included in-box with these small devices. This solution is both cost effective and small enough to provide easy and convenient charging on-the-go when a full-size WattUp transmitter may not be present.
- Energous’ WattUp receiver chip, at only 3mm by 3mm, easily fits inside devices as small as a wearable.
- No contact points and no open ports allow for new robust, waterproof designs.
- All WattUp-enabled products support seamless transitioning from charging via small, portable WattUp transmitters, to stationary in-room transmitters that offer wire-free charging with mobility at a distance. The result is a complete wireless charging ecosystem that supports both near and far-field charging scenarios.
Also, Energous today announced the availability of WattUp evaluation kits for partners in a variety of vertical markets.
